One of the important advantages of using planograms is the improved financial performance of a category. It is important to create and implement planograms on time, to utilize shelf spaces fully by accommodating more products, minimizing out-of-stock and meet consumer demand.

Easy planogram tools like Nexgen POG allows you to set rules to build standard planograms. There are options to create and maintain merchandising guidelines or rules for creating standards for planograms across all distribution, in conjunction with the store design. Once the rule is set then it’s easy to generate any number of planograms based on the set criteria. This makes the process of building and implementing planograms a lot easier.

The planogram software can import shelf rules for the category or product based on its tags. Any planogram generated after setting the rule will be compliant to the set rule. If the user needs to create a new planogram, he just need to generate a new planogram and do the necessary editing. This will save much of his time since the user can work on the shelf modification instead of creating a new planogram from scratch. But any editing that doesn’t comply with the shelf rule would get notified to the user as a warning and restricts from making the changes on the planogram. If the user needs to create a planogram that is non-complaint to the shelf rule, the user may be required to get proper approvals from the category management team.

Product displays can vary, but one scenario remains constant! Most of the decisions are made spontaneously at the point of sale!

Setting shelf guidelines works for point of sales and other counter displays too. We recently had a requirement from a well-known tobacco company to display their cigarette brands in a particular order in the convenience store. They wanted their costlier brands on the top left of the shelf, followed by other brands in the decreasing order of their prices.

By setting rules for the shelves, creating planograms became easier. Planograms could be generated and shared by the click of a button. And the results spoke for themselves!
